    Description

Authentic Handmade 36" AFRICAN Tribal Wood Carved Statue - VOODOO Power Nikisi Nkondi Nail Fetish Figure Holding Severed Head
    Yale University Art Gallery Excerpt:
“A nkisi nkondi is a specific type of power figure in which the spirit was activated by hammering a nail into the figure. At the request of a victim of theft, for instance, a nail would be driven into the wooden figure, and the nkisi-nkondi would punish the thief. A nkisi-nkondi also worked as a deterrent. Important agreements could be sealed in front of the figure, which would then punish all future violators. The mirror of the abdominal box and the whites of these figures’ eyes refer to the ability of the ritual specialist to pass between the worlds of the living and the dead through the watery intermediary divide."
Was told this is likely from The Congo and could be Nikisi Nail Fetish style. From research, there are definite similarities, but cannot verify with 100% certainty its age or local. Buyer accepts this. In any case, it is truly unique/authentic and a museum quality piece. Was acquired from an estate of a wealthy New York City lifelong collector. Measures approximately 36" tall. It is about 12" wide (elbow to elbow). Weighs about 20 pounds. Figure has a basket on his back. Affixed to his mid-section appears to be a severed head. He has nails and metal shards mostly around his neck region, but also has some in feet and legs.  Would make for a wonderful addition to anyone's African art collection, certainly a great conversation piece. Thanks for looking. Feel free to ask questions. No returns.
